Gata is one of the most famous confectionery products of Armenian cuisine, which is based on a puff pastry. Quite simple, in preparation but very tasty Gata will be a good addition to a cup of delightful coffee or tea.
Ingredients:
Dough:5
- all-purpose flour – 3 cups
- butter – 1 1/2 stick or 2/3 cup
- yogurt or buttermilk or kefir – 1 cup
- baking soda – 1 teaspoon
- eggs – 2
Filling:
- sugar – 1 cup
- all-purpose flour – 1 cup
- unsalted butter – 1 1/2 stick or 2/3 cup
Preparation:
- Pour flour into a large bowl, grate batter on a large grater into it, or cut with a knife.
- Add baking soda to yogurt, mix and pour it into the flour with butter, add eggs and mix the dough.
- Divide the dough into three equal pieces and put in the fridge for an hour.
Filling.
- Pour flour and sugar into a large bowl, grate batter on a large grater into it, or cut with a knife.
- Rub the sugar, butter, and flour into small pieces.
Forming.
- Take from the refrigerator one piece of dough and roll it into a thin rectangle.
- Cover the rectangle evenly with 1/3 of filling.
- Wrap the rectangle with filling in the form of a long roll.
- Cover the roll with egg, sprinkle with the filling and divide into small 1-2 inch pieces.
- Do the same with the other two pieces of dough.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees, bake 25 – 30 minutes until golden brown.
